The composition captivates with its stunning color, applied to an engraved design. The limited series consists of only 20,000 pieces available worldwide. Appearance of the 0.25 CAD Pink-backed Loon coin, 2012
This colorful, engraved coin features a male rose-breasted grosbeak delicately perched on a maple branch on the reverse. It has beautiful coloring, a black head, brown feathers on its wings, and a red and white belly. Looking at the image, one might get the impression that the bird is posing for a photo.
The obverse of the coin, as with other coins in this series, features an image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Historical overview
The rose-breasted grosbeak is a songbird belonging to the cardinal family. Males are distinguished by their bold black, white, and light pink plumage. Females have a distinctive white "eyebrow" and double stripe on their wings and are often mistaken for large sparrows. Both males and females have thick, bright beaks. These birds winter in central Mexico and northern South America, then return to their Canadian forests when the days grow longer. They then quickly build their delicate nests, preferring the nooks and crannies of maple trees. They feed mainly on insects in the treetops, but also on seeds, buds, and fruit. At the end of August, these birds begin their journey south again.
Manufacturer
As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To date, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.
The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, medallions, and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its position and reputation.
