Appearance of the 0.25 CAD Purple Coneflower coin 2013

Canadian artist Maurice Gervais presents a beautifully painted purple coneflower on the reverse. It has an orange center and light purple petals set on a green stem with two smooth leaves. A butterfly (Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly) sits on the lower right petal of the flower, its dark purple-blue wings ending in white and black elements. It also has distinctive orange dots at the base of its hind wings. The reverse also features the inscription CANADA, the date 2013, and the denomination 25 CENTS.

The obverse features an image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Historical overview

Purple coneflower is a flower beloved by Canadian gardeners. Not only is it fairly easy to maintain, but it also attracts beautiful butterflies!

The Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly, which we also see on the coin, is a delicate and charming butterfly commonly found in Canada. It is one of the smallest but also one of the most beautiful butterflies in the country. This tiny winged creature enriches Canadian ecosystems with its subtle appearance and unique color pattern. The butterfly has small wings in shades of blue, which give it a delicate and elegant appearance. Its wings are adorned with distinctive tails, which are an extension of the hind wings and give it a unique charm. It is a species that can often be found in various environments, from meadows and gardens to coastal areas. Its presence adds a colorful accent to Canadian landscapes and is an important element of biodiversity. As a symbol of delicacy and harmony, this butterfly is one of Canada's many natural treasures.

Manufacturer

As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To date, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.

The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.

The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, medallions, and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.

Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its position and reputation.
