Product description
The Sikhote-Alin is a unique collector’s coin made from an authentic fragment of one of the most famous iron meteorites in history. Issued in 2026 by Niue, it combines material of cosmic origin with contemporary numismatic design. Each coin has been individually cut from the Sikhote-Alin meteorite, preserving its natural fissures, traces of corrosion, and unique structure. The design is further enhanced by a color overprint and a glow-in-the-dark effect, which makes selected elements glow in the dark.
Appearance of the coin
The design combines the natural texture of a meteorite with motifs inspired by the night sky and astronomy. The obverse features the Niue coat of arms and basic information about the issue, while still showcasing the meteorite’s distinctive surface. The reverse depicts an observer looking through a telescope at a starry sky across which luminous meteors are streaking. A color print highlights the nighttime scenery, and the largest of the depicted meteors features a glow-in-the-dark effect. Natural variations in the material’s texture give each coin a unique appearance.
Historical overview
The coin commemorates the Sikhote-Alin meteorite fall, which occurred on February 12, 1947, in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in the Russian Far East. The meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere at tremendous speed, creating a bright fireball and a long trail visible in the sky. It then broke apart, and its numerous fragments fell to Earth’s surface.
Authentic material from this very meteorite was used to produce the 2026 issue. The 26-mm diameter and 6-mm thickness were not chosen at random—they correspond to the dimensions of the largest crater formed during the Sikhote-Alin impact, which measures approximately 26 meters in diameter and 6 meters in depth.
