Description of the 0.25 CAD Carolina Duck coin 2013

This is the second coin in the popular Ducks of Canada series. This time, it features the aix sponsa, or wood duck, commonly known as the Carolina duck. Some experts consider this species to be the most beautiful waterfowl in North America. The coin commemorates the 75th anniversary of Ducks Unlimited Canada.

The limited edition is only 17,500 pieces worldwide.

Appearance of the 2013 Carolina Duck 0.25 CAD coin

The coin, designed by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant, features a colorful image of a pair of wood ducks nesting on the reverse. In the center, a male duck is seen perched on a tree branch. Its bright eyes attract attention, and the bird's colorful plumage is stunning. Directly behind him, on the same branch, is the female. She has distinctive white rings around her eyes, an indigo-colored beak, and a chestnut-brown torso and sides. The reverse of the coin also features the engraved inscriptions CANADA, the year of minting, and the denomination.

The obverse features an image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Historical overview

The Latin name for this duck, aix sponsa, means "bird in wedding attire." Reaching a length of about 46-56 centimeters, the wood duck is distinguished by its colorful and elegant plumage, which attracts the attention of nature observers.

The male of this duck species is exceptionally impressive. Its head is adorned with intense green plumage, and the characteristic shiny patch on its wing is an elegant feature. Another unusual accent is the reddish ring around its eye, which gives it a unique charm. Some of its feathers are white, while the rest of its plumage is shades of blue, turquoise, and brown, making the wood duck a masterpiece of nature.

The female, although less impressive, has her own charm. Her feathers are mainly brown in color, with delicate spots on the sides. Her "mask" on her face is also characteristic, usually brown in color with a white border around the eyes.

The wood duck inhabits primarily water areas with lush vegetation, where it can easily find food. Its presence in the aquatic environment is a remarkable attraction for nature lovers, who admire both its colorful plumage and elegant behavior on the water.

Manufacturer

As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To date, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.

The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.

The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, medallions, and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.

Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its position and reputation.
