Appearance of the Queen's Beasts: White Horse 2 oz silver coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the White Horse of Hanover. The statue in Westminster refers to George I, the first monarch of the House of Hanover and King of Great Britain and Ireland. He was crowned in 1714 at Westminster Abbey and reigned until 1727. The horse is depicted in motion in the center of the coin. It bears the coat of arms of the rulers of Great Britain and Hanover under its hooves. The animal is set against a beautiful background. Around the horse is the inscription WHITE HORSE OF HANOVER, as well as the date of minting, the fineness and the weight of the metal. The reverse also features the initials of the coin's designer, Jody Clark.

The obverse of the coin was designed by the same designer. In the center is the image of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Around it is the inscription Elizabeth II and the abbreviation D. G. Reg. F. D., which stands for Dei Gratia Regina, Fidei Defensor - which in English means Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith. There is also information about the coin's face value and the designer's initials.

Historical overview

On June 2, 1953, Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at Westminster Abbey. On this occasion, ten heraldic statues were placed in front of the entrance to the Temple. They were designed by James Woodford. Each of them refers to a figure or place of historical importance to the royal family. The statues were named the Queen's Beasts and to this day proudly guard the entrance to the Abbey.

Since 2016, The Royal Mint has been minting coins featuring images of statues from Westminster Abbey. The series is called Queen's Beasts.
