The Australian Nugget gold coin is made from 1 ounce of 999.9 fine gold. It is a very rare coin, which means that its value is determined not only by the price of the metal and the reputation of the Perth Mint, but also by its exceptional collectability.
The reverse of the coin features a nugget with the inscription Along the edge are the name of the coin (THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET), the quantity, fineness, and type of metal contained (1 OZ. 9999 GOLD), and the year of issue.
The obverse features an image of Queen Elizabeth II, the titular head of Australia. Around the profile of the monarch are her name (ELIZABETH II), the name of the issuing country (AUSTRALIA), and the coin's denomination (100 DOLLARS).
The Australian Nugget coin was introduced into circulation in 1987. The issue was intended to commemorate the discovery in 1869 of the world's largest nugget, the "Welcome Stranger." The famous nugget, weighing approximately 72 kg, was discovered by two gold prospectors. The find was unearthed in the Australian state of Victoria.
