Praseodymium—neodymium's twin—enhances the capabilities of the substances with which it is combined. That is why it can be confidently described as "legal doping."
In oxide form, this paramagnetic metal is a dark brown or black powder. When exposed to air, it is slightly more resistant to corrosion than neodymium, but quickly forms a green oxide layer that flakes off in the air. Like neodymium, it is flammable.
Like neodymium, praseodymium is currently used primarily in the production of permanent magnets. It is very similar to neodymium, which is why it is often used in magnets together with neodymium. It is also used in alloys with magnesium to produce high tensile strength metal for aircraft turbines.
Since praseodymium improves UV radiation absorption, it is also used in protective eyewear (e.g., welding goggles). Compounds containing praseodymium are used to color crystal glass green and in ceramic materials with high electrical conductivity.
Why could praseodymium be an interesting investment?
- The steady growth in magnet production should increase demand for praseodymium in the long term. Experts predict that China will not be able to meet the increased demand on its own in the future. Even potential new producers are unlikely to be able to satisfy the market.
- Metal ranks high on the list of key and scarce raw materials in the EU, primarily due to the energy transition and the steadily growing number of electric vehicles and wind turbines. In the medium to long term, therefore, the value of physical praseodymium can be expected to increase.
- The capacity of wind farms in Europe will almost double by 2030.
- The global fleet of electric vehicles could increase twelvefold by 2035.
- The global consumer electronics market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6% through 2030, driven by increasing smartphone market penetration.
