Indium is a shiny, silvery-white, highly ductile metal with a bright luster. It is so soft that it can be cut with a knife, and when rubbed on paper, it leaves a visible line like a pencil. Like tin, indium makes a high-pitched squeak when bent: the crackling of crystals. Like gallium, indium is capable of wetting glass. Like both metals, indium has a low melting point.
It was discovered in 1863 by Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymus Theodor Richter using spectroscopic methods and named after the blue indigo line in its spectrum.
Indium is mainly used in the production of flat displays, and its oxide is essential for obtaining transparent and conductive coatings applied to glass. It is also used in the semiconductor industry, in low-melting-point metal alloys such as seals. It is used in the production of blue and white LED circuits, mainly for the production of semiconductor substrates. It is produced exclusively as a by-product during the processing of other metal ores, mainly from sphalerite and other zinc sulfide ores.
Indium has no biological role, and its compounds are toxic when inhaled or injected into the bloodstream, although they are poorly absorbed when ingested.
Our supplier, TRADIUM, is registered as an indium distributor under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals), ensuring that it meets the highest standards of transparency and information flow throughout the supply chain.
Why could India be an interesting investment?
- Annual global demand for indium in the renewable energy sector is projected to increase from 48 tons in 2020 to 1,000 tons in 2050.
- By 2029, the cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) for thin-film photovoltaic cells is expected to reach 15.1%, and by 2029, this market is expected to double to approximately $12.4 billion.
- The smartphone market in Europe will grow at a rate of approximately 3.4% per year.
