Gal to lśniący srebrny metal, który wyróżnia się fascynującą niespójnością: w temperaturze nieco wyższej niż pokojowa (29,8°C) topi się i kurczy. Jednak temperatura wrzenia jest niezwykle wysoka: to aż 2403°C.

Gal ma wiele interesujących obszarów zastosowań. Należą do nich półprzewodniki, elektrownie słoneczne i elektrotechnika, a także diody LED i AMOLED. Na całym świecie diody LED są coraz częściej używane, przemysł fotowoltaiczny rośnie, tak samo sprzedaż mobilnych urządzeń high-tech, takich jak notebooki i smartfony.

Ponadto surowiec jest również stosowany w magnesach trwałych, ważnych dla pojazdów elektrycznych i elektrowni wiatrowych. W termometrach klinicznych gal zastępuje toksyczną rtęć.

Gal jest krytycznym surowcem i w związku z tym ma duże znaczenie ekonomiczne, a przy tym ograniczoną dostępność. Globalna zdolność produkcyjna tego rzadkiego metalu wynosi obecnie około 720 ton rocznie i osiągnęła już swój limit, a popyt stale rośnie.
