Description of the 2024 Year of the Dragon 1-ounce Gold Coin
The new 1-troy-ounce 2024 Year of the Dragon gold coin from the Lunar III series is a rare treat for collectors and investors alike. This is the fifth release in the series, produced by the renowned Australian mint, The Perth Mint. Lunar III coins are extremely popular among collectors worldwide. This is especially true given that the mintage of this coin is limited to just 30,000 pieces. The coin features a security feature in the form of an engraved letter within the design, which is visible only under a magnifying glass.
Previous editions of this series included, in order: the Year of the Rat (2020), the Year of the Ox (2021), the Year of the Tiger (2022), and the Year of the Rabbit (2023).
This richly decorated coin is legal tender. Each bullion coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.
Appearance of the 2024 Year of the Dragon 1-ounce gold coin
To celebrate the upcoming New Year, the coin’s reverse features the Chinese Wood Dragon, as 2024 will be its year. Here, we can see a meticulously engraved dragon against a backdrop of stylized mist and waves. On the right side is the Chinese character for “dragon” and the inscription “DRAGON 2024.” The mint’s abbreviation, P125, marks the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint. What an impressive milestone!
The obverse was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the dates of her reign (1952–2022), as well as the weight, fineness, and denomination.
Historical overview
The Chinese zodiac is an integral part of Chinese culture and associates each year with one of 12 animals: the Rat, Ox, Rabbit, Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig, as well as one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The upcoming year 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon, which begins on February 10, 2024, and lasts until January 28, 2025. The dragon is a revered symbol in Chinese tradition and is known for its power, wisdom, integrity, kindness, good fortune, and success. The upcoming Year of the Wood Dragon in 2024 brings growth, success, prosperity, happiness, and abundance to all. It represents the Yang element and is associated with fire.
People born in the Year of the Wood Dragon are characterized by intelligence, creativity, and a sense of humor. They are also distinguished by their sensitivity, ambition, and tenacity. When hurt, they lose their optimistic outlook. The previous Year of the Wood Dragon was celebrated 60 years ago—in 1964. Famous people born then include Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Lenny Kravitz, and Sandra Bullock.
