Description of the "Queen's Beasts: White Hound of Richmond" 1/4-ounce gold coin

This is the final release in the iconic Queen’s Beasts series, consisting of 10 different coins. These coins are highly sought after by both collectors and investors. This collection brings ancient symbols of royal power and heraldry to life in a series of prestigious coins. Renowned designer Jody Clark has reimagined the ten beasts that stood guard during Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953—each representing the heritage of ancestors and the desirable qualities of a monarch.

This gold coin, with a purity of 999, weighs ¼ ounce and features a goshawk, which symbolizes the House of Lancaster and the House of York.

The reverse of the coin features the White Hound of Richmont. It is a symbol of the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The shield held by the greyhound bears the Tudor rose. Combining the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York, it symbolizes the way in which Henry VII united these warring houses, ending the War of the Roses. Artist Jody Clark has captured the nobility of the greyhound, as well as its strength and elegance.

The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by the same artist.

Historical overview

The War of the Roses was a civil war fought in England from 1455 to 1485. During this conflict, 18 land battles and one naval engagement took place. It was a war for the English throne between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. However, this conflict led to the extinction of the male lines of both dynasties, resulting in the Tudors coming to power.

When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, the entrances to Westminster Abbey were guarded by 10 beasts – statues created especially for the occasion by James Woodford and inspired by the Beasts of King Henry VIII.

The six-foot-tall beasts symbolized the heritage and history that Queen Elizabeth II inherited on that day and from which the royal family descends.

The "Queen's Beasts" coin series commemorates this unique event and recognizes the magnificent artistic work full of symbols and meanings.

It is one of the most popular coin series in history and a must-have for any collection.
