Description of the Canadian Maple Leaf 40th Anniversary 1 oz gold coin
This coin was created to mark the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the popular Gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979. The Maple Leaf was the world's first bullion coin to be legal tender and contain 99.99% pure gold. It is a hallmark of the Royal Canadian Mint's manufacturing excellence.
Appearance of the Canadian Maple Leaf 40th Anniversary 1 oz gold coin
The reverse features Canada's national symbol, the Maple Leaf, entwined with the large number 40 and the inscription CANADA above it. To the left and right of the maple leaf are four nines side by side (referring to the purity of the coin's metal), beneath which is engraved a tiny security mark and the text FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR (1 ounce of pure gold).
The obverse features an image of Queen Elizabeth II. As a member of the Commonwealth, Canada had Queen Elizabeth II as its reigning constitutional monarch. Above the image of the Queen is her name, ELIZABETH II, and at the bottom of the coin is the face value of $50 and the years 1979-2019, marking the 40th anniversary of the coin's issue.
Historical overview
The Gold Maple Leaf has become the world's most popular 24-karat bullion coin. Its purity (.9999) has set the global standard and helped build its reputation as one of the most sought-after bullion coins. Therefore, any investor looking to add physical gold to their portfolio should seriously consider this beautiful Canadian special edition coin. The introduction of the 24-karat gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint marked a major shift in the investment gold industry. Until 1979, all popular gold coins were made from alloys containing other metals. The reason gold coins were minted this way for centuries is that pure gold is extremely soft, and therefore coins made from pure gold would not be suitable for circulation as they would be susceptible to dents and scratches. The idea behind the introduction of the Maple Leaf gold coin was the belief that in the future, investors would be more likely to accumulate physical gold as a form of long-term savings rather than use it to settle commercial transactions, thus making the need for servicing unnecessary.
Manufacturer
As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. That is why the Royal Canadian Mint was established in 1908 and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. However, to this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.
The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, medallions, and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its position and reputation.
