It is considered one of the most exclusive coins and the biggest competitor to South Africa's Krugerrand. It was introduced into circulation in 1979, making it the longest-running bullion coin made of pure 999.9 gold.
Each Maple Leaf on the obverse depicts the image of the current ruler. It also bears the ruler's name, denomination, and date of issue of the gold coin. The reverse features a maple leaf, which is Canada's national symbol. It also bears the gold fineness and the name of the issuing country. The coin was designed by Walter Otto.
