Product description
The coin is part of a series dedicated to the birds of prey of North America. The series was created to combine the investment value of silver with nature-themed designs, showcasing the most impressive species inhabiting Canadian territories. This issue launched the entire series, which quickly gained popularity among collectors and investors. The design features one of the world’s most extraordinary birds of prey. The peregrine falcon is renowned for its exceptional speed and precision while hunting, which is why it has long been admired by nature observers. The coin was created for nature lovers, ornithologists, and collectors seeking coins that depict animals in a realistic manner.
Appearance of the coin
The design stands out for its dynamism and perfectly captures the movement characteristic of a bird of prey during an attack. The relief was crafted with great care, giving the composition the appearance of a still life captured in a moment in time. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by elements identifying the issuer, the year of issue, and the face value. The design is in the classic style characteristic of contemporary Canadian coins. The reverse depicts a peregrine falcon in the midst of a lightning-fast dive toward its prey. The bird is shown with its wings spread wide and its talons extended, ready to strike. Particular attention is drawn to the details of the plumage and the realistically rendered silhouette, which emphasize the predator’s strength and agility.
Historical overview
The coin was issued as the first installment in the “Birds of Prey” series, dedicated to North America’s most famous birds of prey. The series consisted of four issues featuring different bird species and was intended to showcase the richness of Canada’s natural world in a modern numismatic form.
The peregrine falcon was chosen for the inaugural issue for a reason. It is considered one of the fastest animals in the world—during a dive, it can reach speeds exceeding 300 km/h. Its extraordinary hunting abilities and widespread distribution have made it a symbol of strength, speed, and excellent adaptation to its environment. The issue was created to highlight the beauty of North American wildlife and to enrich the range of collector and investment coins with an attractive nature-themed design.
Manufacturer
As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To date, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.
The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, medallions, and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its position and reputation.
