On June 2, 1953, Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at Westminster Abbey. On this occasion, ten heraldic statues were placed in front of the entrance to the Temple. They were designed by James Woodford. Each of them refers to a figure or place of historical importance to the royal family. The statues were named the Queen's Beasts and to this day proudly guard the entrance to the Abbey.
Since 2016, The Royal Mint has been minting coins featuring images of statues from Westminster Abbey. The series is called Queen's Beasts.
The reverse of the coin features a falcon. The coat of arms is placed in the falcon's talons. The edge bears information such as: weight (2 oz), fineness (999.9), year of minting (2017), and the inscription Falcon of Plantagenets. The initials of the coin's designer, JC, can be seen on the reverse.
The obverse of the coin features the image of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Around it is the inscription Elizabeth II D.G. REG. F.D., which translates as Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith. In addition, the coin also features the face value (5 POUNDS) and the initials of the designer – JC.
