Made from 1 ounce of 999 fine silver, the Australian Eagle coin features a spectacular image of Australia's largest bird of prey, designed by renowned American sculptor John M. Mercanti. The coin is legal tender in Australia.
One side of the coin depicts the Australian wedge-tailed eagle. Its alert eyes, which allow it to spot prey from high above, are clearly visible. Another striking feature is its large, hooked, and formidable beak, which the bird uses to hunt and eat its prey. In addition to the name of the bird, AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE, the coin also features the letter "P," which is the symbol of The Perth Mint. The reverse also includes the coin's weight, fineness, and year. The appearance of the reverse changes each year.
The obverse features the image of Queen Elizabeth II along with the denomination.
Named for its long, characteristically shaped tail, the Australian wedge-tailed eagle has a wingspan exceeding 2.5 meters.
