Product description

The coin is a commemorative piece minted on the initiative of the National Bank of Poland to mark the 150th anniversary of the National Museum in Warsaw, one of the oldest and most important cultural institutions in Poland, which for decades has collected and exhibited works of art from various periods, enriching national collections and promoting art history in the country. It is a collector's item that combines commemorative value with references to the rich museum tradition, making it an interesting addition to the numismatic collections of those interested in the history of art and cultural heritage of Poland.

Appearance of the coin

The overall design of the coin is a symbolic composition combining elements referring to the history of art collections and their significance for culture, with clear anniversary inscriptions arranged in a transparent manner on both sides of the designs.  The reverse of the coin features an image of the Egyptian god Anubis in the form of a dog, located at the top left; below is the date range 1862–2012, which refers to the period of the museum's activity, and in the rim, on a separate plane, there is an inscription commemorating 150 years of the National Museum in Warsaw, which creates a clear and balanced jubilee composition. The obverse focuses on the emblem of the Republic of Poland – a crowned eagle, placed centrally against the background of an inscription indicating the issuing country and the year of issue; the rim around the eagle features inscriptions identifying the country and the date, and below the emblem there is a small mint mark, which emphasizes the official nature of the coin.  The entire design is characterized by a clear combination of figurative and textual elements, which facilitates the identification of the theme and gives the coin a commemorative and artistic character.

Historical overview

The National Museum in Warsaw was established in 1862 as one of the most important cultural institutions in Poland, with the aim of collecting, protecting, and making works of art available to the public. From the very beginning, the museum collected exhibits from various eras and regions, including paintings, sculptures, graphics, archaeological monuments, and objects of applied art, creating rich and diverse national collections. In the interwar period, the museum developed its exhibition and educational activities, organizing temporary exhibitions and popularizing knowledge about art among the public. During World War II, part of the collection was destroyed or taken away, but after the war, the museum began to rebuild and restore the collection, striving to preserve both its pre-war achievements and to introduce new acquisitions. Today, the National Museum in Warsaw is an institution of national and international importance, serving as a center for art education, scientific research, and the promotion of Polish and world cultural heritage. The 150th anniversary of the institution highlights its role in shaping the artistic awareness of society and its ongoing mission to protect and promote art in Poland.
