Description of the silver coin Konrad Korzeniowski - Joseph Conrad
A collector's coin issued by the National Bank of Poland in 2007 to commemorate the Polish-born English writer and journalist Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski (1857–1924). It was designed by Robert Kotowicz, and its high quality and use of holographic technology make it highly valued by both collectors and literature enthusiasts. This issue is part of a series of coins dedicated to outstanding Poles, aimed at commemorating people who, through their work and activities, have contributed to the development of culture and the strengthening of Poland's positive image in the world.
Appearance of the silver coin Konrad Korzeniowski - Joseph Conrad
The coin has been designed with attention to detail, emphasizing both the artistic and historical dimensions of the souvenir. The reverse depicts the English ship Otago, on which Conrad sailed, symbolizing his close connection to the sea. The most striking feature of the design is the hologram, which reflects the ship in the water and changes color depending on the angle of view. This gives the coin a unique depth and modern character. The obverse features an image of Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski and his signature, which has become a recognizable symbol of the writer. The denomination of the coin is on the left, and the coat of arms of the Republic of Poland is on the right. The whole coin has been finished using the mirror stamp technique, which makes the surface smooth and shiny, further emphasizing the finesse of the design.
Historical overview
The coin, issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski, was intended to honor the outstanding writer who, despite spending most of his life outside Poland, left an indelible mark on world literature. His work, full of sea adventures and profound reflections on human nature, gained international recognition, and his books, such as Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, are considered classics of literature. The coin was issued to commemorate his life, literary work, and connection to Poland, his homeland.
Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was born on December 3, 1857, in Berdyczów. He came from a Polish noble family. At the age of 16, he began his life as a sailor, first in the French and then in the British merchant navy, where he rose to the rank of captain. His maritime experiences became the inspiration for his literary work. After ending his career, he settled in England and began writing. His debut, Almayer's Folly, was published in 1895, and his later works brought him fame. Although English was not his native language, Conrad became one of the most prominent English-language writers. He died on August 3, 1924, in England, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.
