Appearance of the silver Pantokrator coin

The reverse features a precise reproduction of this iconic work, showing a portrait of Jesus Christ with a halo on a golden background. The whole has been enriched with intricately reproduced details, giving a realistic structure to the mosaic tiles. In addition, thanks to the use of selective gilding, Christ's halo and selected elements of the mosaic take on a unique glow, emphasizing the spiritual nature of the representation. The obverse of the coin traditionally features the image of Queen Elizabeth II, along with information about the issuer, denomination, and year of issue. The coin design was inspired by a mosaic depicting Christ Pantocrator, part of the Deesis group in the Hagia Sophia church in Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), which for centuries was the heart of the Christian Byzantine Empire. The interior of the basilica is decorated with marble, intricately carved columns, and stunning mosaics made of stone, gold, and glass. The face of Christ in the mosaic is composed of thousands of tiny pieces, creating an incredibly vivid image, considered one of the greatest achievements of European civilization.

The coin combines numismatics and sacred art, paying tribute to the Byzantine iconographic tradition.
