In addition to various chemical and electronic applications, low-melting alloys are an important area of application for bismuth. These alloys are used, among other things, in sprinkler systems, fuel tanks, steam boilers, safety valves, and for sealing closed oil wells. Pigments are another important area of application, and bismuth is also used in the manufacture of semiconductor components. The metal has also become a sought-after substitute for lead, for example in the food industry, as it is non-toxic unlike lead.
Why could bismuth be an interesting investment?
- According to EU regulations on critical raw materials (CRMA), bismuth is considered a strategic raw material. As such, it is of particular importance to industry and is associated with a high risk of shortage. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and South Korea also classify this metal as a critical raw material. Bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃) is the most popular thermoelectric compound, used in a wide range of applications from temperature sensors to waste heat power generation; the market is small but is expected to grow with the increasing focus on energy efficiency and heat recovery.
- Photovoltaics is seen as a potential driver of demand for bismuth. This metal is used as a soldering material in photovoltaic modules.
