Red stones are elegant, sophisticated, and sexy—perfect for an evening out. What stones can you choose from? Rubies, of course, but that's not all. Here are the four most popular red gemstones.
RUBIN
Did you know that rubies and sapphires are essentially the same thing? Both are precious varieties of corundum. Rubies are among the most valuable stones in jewelry. They range in color from pink to blood red.
GRANAT
Another stone most commonly associated with red is garnet. Garnets are usually red, orange-red, and purple-red, but they can also be other colors. Where does the name come from? The stone was named garnet because its shape and color resemble the seeds of a pomegranate.
KORAL
Coral is the third most popular red gemstone. Contrary to appearances, not all corals are red (there are also white, pink, purple, blue, black, and even gold corals), but coral red corals are the most well-known. We have written more about coral here.
SPINEL
Spinel was long considered to be ruby due to its beautiful red color. It was only after its chemical composition was discovered that it was identified as a separate stone. Spinels can also be colorless, purple, blue, green, dark brown, and black. The stones mentioned above are not the only red gemstones. Tourmaline, topaz, cordierite, amber, zircon, rhodolite, and carnelian can also be red. Diamonds can also be red, but red diamonds are extremely rare and, as a result, extremely expensive.
