GREEN PRECIOUS STONES

Are you looking for jewelry with green gemstones? You have many options. Emerald, tourmaline, olivine, tsavorite, or perhaps diopside? And these are not the only possibilities.

EMERALD

Emerald is the most valuable and sought-after green gemstone. In fact, emerald is a variety of beryl, but only green beryl can be called emerald (similarly, aquamarine is also beryl, but only blue beryl can be called aquamarine). Emeralds range in color from blue-green to grass green.

SAPPHIRE

As we wrote recently, blue sapphires are the most sought-after, but sapphires can also be green. So if you want luxury jewelry, you can choose a green sapphire instead of an emerald.

Tourmaline

Another beautiful green gemstone is tourmaline – the favorite stone of Hans Stern, one of the most famous jewelers in history. Tourmalines can be colorless, red, blue, green, purple, brown, black, and multicolored (so-called watermelon). Some tourmalines also change color depending on the type of light – in natural light they are yellowish-green, in artificial light – orange-red. So, how about tourmaline?

OLIVINE/PERIDOT

Another suggestion is olivine. Olivine, especially its precious variety known as peridot, is a transparent green stone with a beautiful green color. Olivines with an intense green or golden-green color are particularly striking.

TSAVORYT

Tsavorite was promoted by Tiffany&Co in the 1970s. It is transparent and has a unique emerald green color, which makes it a strong competitor to emeralds. It sparkles almost as intensely as an emerald, but has twice the dispersion, making it even more dazzling. So why is it so little known? Because fifty years ago, no one knew about it.

DIOPSYD

Diopside is not a particularly exclusive stone, but its intense color makes it noteworthy. Although diopside is not always green (it can also be gray, colorless, or brown), only transparent diopsides with a vivid, intense green color are used in jewelry.

MALACHITE

Malachite is a very popular, inexpensive, and impressive stone. Malachite is an opaque stone with a characteristic green color (known as malachite green) and a patterned internal structure: striped, ribboned, or grained. The richer and more interesting the pattern, the more attractive the malachite.

The stones mentioned above are not the only green gemstones. Demantoids are also green, as can be diamonds, amber, pearls, spinels, zircons, quartz, jade, alexandrites, and turquoise.
