Not only do they exist, but they are also the most expensive. When writing about diamonds, we mentioned that color is the second most important factor determining the value of a diamond. The more colorless a diamond is, the more valuable it is; the more yellow it is, the cheaper it is. But there is an exception: fancy colored diamonds. A diamond weighing about one carat with a deep blue color can cost nearly PLN 3 million, which is about 60 times more than its perfectly clear, colorless counterpart*.
Only one in 10,000 diamonds has a natural color, hence the price. Fancy-colored diamonds can come in a variety of colors. They are usually warm colors such as yellow, orange, or brown, but there are also pink, green, blue, and purple ones.
When it comes to fancy colored diamonds, color is the most important factor. The more intense the color, the rarer and more valuable the diamond. Another factor that determines the price of these diamonds is size. Large stones are much rarer than small ones, so their price increases dramatically with weight. The quality of the cut, clarity, and type of cut are of secondary importance. Because fancy colored diamonds are cut in such a way as to bring out the maximum depth of color, their shape is often non-standard, and it may be impossible to find a diamond with a specific shape and color.
There are also natural black diamonds, which differ from the others in that they do not sparkle and do not transmit light. However, they are not as valuable as fancy-colored diamonds. Although jewelers often sell them at prices similar to those of colorless diamonds, black diamonds sold as an investment (rather than as jewelry) are cheaper than colorless diamonds.
