The fourth coin in a unique collection of ten-zloty coins featuring the famous Queen’s Beasts, issued by the renowned Royal Mint.

Historical overview

The Queen’s Beasts are 10 sculptures created by James Woodford, RA, for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which took place at Westminster Abbey in 1953. Each sculpture depicts one of the mythical creatures symbolizing a family or place associated with the House of Windsor. Today, they are on display at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Quebec City. Stone replicas of the beasts, also sculpted by James Woodford, stand in the Kew Gardens complex in London.

Design of the "Queen's Beasts: Unicorn" 1/4-ounce gold coin

The reverse of the coin features a unicorn, which has been used as one of Scotland’s symbols since the 12th century. This was due in part to William I, who created an early version of the Scottish coat of arms. The animal was adopted from Celtic mythology, where it symbolizes purity and vitality. Since the reign of James VI, the unicorn has been one of the two heraldic supporters of the coat of arms of Great Britain, alongside the lion. The pairing of these animals symbolizes the unity of the Kingdom. Surrounding the animal’s silhouette are details about the coin: the name (UNICORN OF SCOTLAND), the amount and type of precious metal (¼ OZ FINE GOLD), the fineness (999.9), and the year of minting.

The obverse of the coin features a profile of Queen Elizabeth II. The edge bears the inscription: ELIZABETH II D. G. REG. F. D. (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith) 25 POUNDS (25 pounds sterling). The Queen’s portrait has been polished. The obverse surface has been treated with a special texture that protects the coin against counterfeiting.
