Description of the Perth Mint 125th Anniversary 1 oz gold coin

The coin is struck from 1 ounce of pure 999 gold and is an excellent investment opportunity commemorating the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint in 2024. The Perth Mint was opened on June 20, 1899, at the height of the gold rush in Western Australia.

Appearance of the Perth Mint 125th Anniversary 1 oz gold coin

Referencing its most famous contemporary coin series, this coin features a kangaroo, kookaburra, and koala artistically placed among golden wattle, Australia's national flower. At the bottom of the design is the inscription: 1899 THE PERTH MINT 2024. Additionally, the mint mark P125 and the weight, purity, and year of minting are also included.

The obverse of the coin features an effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Dan Thorne and the denomination of the coin.

Historical overview

The history of The Perth Mint dates back to the late 19th century, when the discovery of rich gold deposits in Western Australia sparked a gold rush there. In 1896, the Western Australian colonial government decided to establish a mint in Perth, which led to the official opening of The Perth Mint on June 20, 1899, attended by the Premier of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest. From the outset, the mint was involved in minting coins, mainly gold, to meet local market needs. In 1931, the Perth Mint was taken over by the Australian federal government, which contributed to its restructuring and development. During World War II, the Mint increased its production, becoming a coin-producing facility for British troops in Southeast Asia. After the war, the Mint returned to producing coins for civilians and began minting silver coins. In the following years, it gained international renown for its production of bullion coins, which are prized by collectors and investors around the world. Today, the Perth Mint is one of the leading producers of precious metal products and continues to play an important role in the Australian minting system.
