Historical overview
Super Pit, also known as the Fimiston Open Pit, is a massive open-pit mine in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia. It is one of the world’s largest gold mines and the largest of its kind in Australia. The history of Super Pit dates back to the 1980s, when two separate pits—Fimiston and Gidji—were merged to form a single massive pit. Today, the mine is operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), which is owned by Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Gold Corporation. Super Pit is enormous. It measures approximately 3.5 km long, 1.5 km wide, and over 600 meters deep. It is one of the most spectacular sites in Western Australia and attracts numerous tourists.
This mine also plays a significant role in Western Australia’s economy and in the global gold market. The mining process at Super Pit involves using large machinery, such as excavators and trucks, to remove large amounts of rock and soil in order to reach the gold deposits. These deposits occur in the form of particles or grains within the rock and overburden, which requires the use of advanced technologies as well as a skilled workforce.
