The Lunar II series of gold bullion coins was produced by The Perth Mint in Australia, inspired by the Chinese lunar calendar. Following the success of the first series, the second edition was launched in 2008. The final coin in this 12-coin series will go on sale in 2019.
Coins in this series are an excellent investment, offering a full range of weights and crafted from a 0.9999-purity alloy. An additional advantage is the variable reverse design, which is particularly appealing to collectors and numismatics enthusiasts.
The Chinese zodiac calendar consists of 12 signs, each of which represents an animal associated with certain human traits. Not only are the months of the year divided according to these signs, but so are the hours of the day. Additionally, time is divided into five 12-year cycles corresponding to the Chinese elements.
The coin is minted in 1/2 ounce of 999.9-fine gold. As with other Australian coins, the obverse features a profile of Queen Elizabeth II, the official head of state. It is accompanied by a legend that also provides the coin’s specifications.
The reverse side features the silhouette of a dog walking along a rocky path and looking back over its shoulder, symbolizing loyalty and devotion to its owner. Above the silhouette is a Chinese character representing the word "dog."
