Description of the 2024 Year of the Dragon 1/10 oz gold coin

This is the fifth time that The Perth Mint in Australia has proudly issued the Lunar III series of gold coins. In recent years, coins referring to the ancient Chinese calendar have appeared. These were, in order: Year of the Rat 2020, Year of the Ox 2021, Year of the Tiger 2022, and Year of the Rabbit 2023. February 10, 2024, is Chinese New Year. According to the horoscope, the Year of the Water Rabbit will end then and the Year of the Wood Dragon will begin, lasting until January 29, 2025. There are 12 animals in the Chinese calendar. Apart from the dragon, these are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

This richly decorated coin is legal tender. Each bullion coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.

Appearance of the 2024 Year of the Dragon 1/10 oz gold coin

The reverse of the gold coin features an engraved, majestic dragon. It is depicted against a background of mist and stylized waves at the bottom. The Chinese character for dragon and the inscription DRAGON 2024 can also be found here. The mint's abbreviation P125 refers to the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint.

The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is complemented by her reign (1952-2022), as well as the weight, fineness, and denomination. It was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Historical overview

The Wood Dragon is one of the 12 animals featured in the Chinese lunar-solar calendar. These animals belong to the five elements, which are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The coming year 2024 belongs to the Wood Dragon. This sign characterizes intelligent and creative people, who are distinguished by their gentleness and stubbornness. When hurt, they lose their optimistic attitude. The previous Year of the Wood Dragon was celebrated 60 years ago, in 1964. Famous people born then include Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Lenny Kravitz, and Sandra Bullock.
