The Chinese Panda coin, produced by China Gold Coin Corp. since 1982, is an iconic bullion coin. Its design changes every year, which not only helps preserve capital but also makes it an excellent addition to any collector’s portfolio. The 8-gram gold coin is struck from pure 999-fine gold. Issued exclusively by the People’s Bank of China, it is legal tender and carries a government guarantee of weight and purity.
The obverse features the famous Temple of Heaven (Tian Tan), located in Beijing. It is surrounded by the inscription “People’s Republic of China” and the year the coin was minted. The reverse design changes every year and features a panda. It also includes information on the coin’s weight, the purity of the metal, and its face value in yuan.
Gold Pandas have been minted since 1982 in denominations of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce. In later years, denominations of 1/20 ounce, 5 ounces, and 12 ounces were also introduced. In 2016, the People’s Republic of China began minting Gold Pandas in metric sizes to better align them with the coins’ international character. Each year, the coins are minted at several mints, including those in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Shenyang.
Mints are known for subtle differences in coin design (such as font size or temple designs in certain years). Thanks to annual design changes and unique mint variations, the price of Golden Pandas has risen over time, making them highly sought after by collectors and investors.
The China Central Mint boasts a long history and an excellent reputation. It has over 100 years of tradition in the production of bullion products. Its origins date back to 1920, and eight years later its name was changed from the Shanghai Mint to the China Central Mint, operating under the People’s Bank of China. It issues bullion bars and coins that attract significant interest among collectors and investors. The designs of this mint combine beauty and delicacy. Interestingly, the year of issue of a given coin can often be identified by differences in the design, as coins issued by the China Central Mint from the same series feature a new and slightly modified design each year.
