Description of the 2024 1/10-ounce Polar Bear Gold Coin

The coin continues the story depicted on the first bullion coin in this series from 2022 and also features a tender scene of a female polar bear and her nearly independent cub in their natural habitat. Each bullion coin is made of 24-karat gold with a fineness of 999 and a minimum guaranteed weight of 1/10 ounce.

Appearance of the 2024 1/10-ounce Polar Bear Gold Coin

The reverse design, created by Canadian artist W. Allan Hancock, depicts a female polar bear (Ursus maritimus) and her nearly independent cubs cuddling together in their Arctic habitat. This scene, enhanced with paw prints that complement the theme, is set against a background of stylized sunbeams. The coin’s purity and weight, as well as the inscription “CANADA” and the year “2024,” are engraved along the outer rim.

The obverse features a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, surrounded by sunbeams, designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

Historical overview

Young polar bears stay with their mothers for the first two or three years of their lives. When they set out on their own and become independent, these bears must overcome many challenges while continuing to hone their hunting skills. Survival rates improve as they reach maturity and are ready to reproduce—this occurs between about four and six years of age for females, while the prime breeding years for males begin around the age of ten.

Before that, the young are under their mother’s watchful care and learn from her the basic skills they will later use in adulthood.

Manufacturer

As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. Therefore, in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was established and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. To date, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.

The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.

The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services. Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, a testament to its standing and reputation.
