Description of the 1/10 oz Libertad silver coin

The 1/10 oz Libertad silver coin is one of the most recognizable investment coins minted by the Mexican Mint (Casa de Moneda de México). The Libertad stands out for its unique symbolism, referring to the history and culture of Mexico, and its high quality. The coin has no official denomination, but it is legal tender in Mexico, and its value is based on its silver content.  It is a smaller version of the famous 1-ounce Libertad coin, which has won the recognition of collectors and investors around the world.

Appearance of the 1/10 ounce Libertad silver coin

The coin is a valuable issue of the Mexican Mint, struck from pure silver. It is part of the famous Libertad series, known for its beautiful design and high quality. The obverse features the coat of arms of Mexico with an eagle standing on a cactus and holding a snake in its beak. It is also surrounded by other Mexican vegetation. This design is a reminder of the pre-colonial heritage and legend of the founding of Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City. The reverse features a statue of Victoria, the Winged Goddess of Liberty. She is depicted against the backdrop of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. The whole design also refers to the Aztec legend of the tragic love between a warrior and a princess, adding a deeper cultural dimension to the design.  Despite its small size, the coin retains all the details characteristic of the series, combining beauty with investment value.

Historical overview

Libertad coins have their roots in Mexico's historical heritage and minting traditions dating back to the 16th century. Their history is deeply connected with the country's independence, its culture, and the rich experience of the Mexican Mint. The coin was first minted in 1982. The artistic model for the Libertad series was the statue of the Winged Goddess of Liberty, standing on the "Independence" column in Mexico City, which became a symbol of national pride and the struggle for freedom.

The 1/10 ounce version, introduced in the 1990s, was designed to make silver coins more accessible to smaller investors. Although this coin is legal tender, it has no face value—its value is based on the price of silver and the prestige of the series. With its rich history and symbolism, it has gained a reputation as one of the most sought-after investment and collector coins.

Manufacturer

The Casa de Moneda de México, founded in 1535, is the oldest operating mint in the Americas. It was established on the initiative of King Charles V of Spain to support the monetary system of the colonies in the New World. In 1536, it began minting the first silver coins, known as "real de a ocho," which became a global means of payment and a symbol of Spain's commercial power.

After Mexico gained independence in 1821, the mint began producing national coins, such as the peso, with symbols of freedom and independence. Today, the mint is famous for its prestigious investment and collector coins and for using modern technology while preserving tradition. The mint is located in San Luis Potosí, where it has been operating for over 500 years, symbolizing the quality and history of Mexico.
