Description of the 1 oz Royal Coats of Arms silver coin

This silver bullion coin from the Royal Mint depicts the Royal Arms, a symbol of the strength and majesty of Great Britain. The coin contains 1 ounce of 999 fine silver, and the obverse features an image of the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain along with the denomination of £2.

The coin is inspired by one of the oldest symbols associated with the British monarchy, namely the coat of arms of Great Britain.

Appearance of the 1 oz Royal Coats of Arms silver coin

The reverse depicts the current version and modern interpretation of the Royal Arms, with a shield divided into four parts, each representing the nations under the United Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland). The shield is supported on one side by the crowned English lion and on the other by the Scottish unicorn. In the background of the coin, rays are engraved, lending the composition a sense of majesty and elegance.

Depending on the year of production, the obverse of the coin features a different image of the monarch. Older coins feature Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, while newer coins issued after 2023 may feature a portrait of King Charles III. The changing image on the obverse makes each coin unique to its time, further enhancing its collectible and historical value. The photo of the coin is for illustrative purposes only. The obverse may vary depending on the year. Coins are allocated randomly.

Historical overview

The history of the Great Britain coat of arms dates back to the end of the 12th century, during the reign of King Richard I. Since then, the coat of arms has been modified, but its most important elements have been preserved to this day. Eric Sewell's iconic design has been reinterpreted on this bullion coin by designer Timothy Noad. The royal coat of arms, divided into four parts, features three English lions in the first and fourth quarters and a lion representing Scotland in the second. The third quarter features the harp of Ireland. The shield is supported on one side by the English lion with a crown and on the other by the Scottish unicorn, and is surrounded by the inscription HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (Shame on him who thinks ill of it). The coin also features the Welsh por. At the bottom of the coat of arms is the inscription DIEU ET MON DROIT (from French, God and my right), which is the motto of the English crown.
