Historical overview
Britannia has been a female symbol of Great Britain for centuries. Her image has evolved over many years, reflecting the desire to capture the spirit of the nation she represents. This figure first appeared on the coins of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The current incarnation of Britannia was created by sculptor Philip Nathan in 1987. He depicted the "queen of the seas" with carefully selected symbols of British identity - a shield for protection, an olive branch for peace, and a trident symbolizing the surrounding sea. This award-winning design was used by the Royal Mint to create the unique Britannia coin.
