Product description

This numismatic piece was created as a fusion of the art of coinage with the heritage of historical painting, drawing inspiration from the work of Jan Matejko, one of the most outstanding artists of the 19th century. Its concept is based on translating motifs familiar from classical painting into the form of a coin, which lends the piece a distinct cultural and symbolic dimension. The project is aimed at audiences interested in history and art, allowing them to engage with important historical themes in a lasting, tangible form. Such issues also serve an educational purpose, highlighting the significance of the depicted events and their place in history.

Appearance of the coin

The entire project gives the impression of a highly aesthetic piece, often presented in an elegant collector's case along with a certificate, which underscores the set's prestige.

The reverse side features a miniature reproduction of Jan Matejko’s painting “Copernicus the Astronomer, or A Conversation with God,” rendered as a detailed composition. The central part features the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus depicted in a scene of a symbolic and scientific nature, and the whole captures the atmosphere of the original work through a wealth of detail and a clearly defined visual narrative.

The obverse has a more structured and formal layout, featuring identifying elements typical of coins, such as the national coat of arms, the issuer’s name, and the arrangement of the inscriptions. The composition of this side is symmetrical and understated, providing a stark contrast to the elaborate, artistic reverse. The coin combines historical painting with the classical minting form, creating a cohesive composition with a distinct cultural and collectible character.

Historical overview

The coin was issued in 2009 as part of a series dedicated to the work of Jan Matejko, which aimed to bring the most important works of Polish historical painting into the realm of numismatics. It was the first issue in the series, marking the beginning of a collection comprising several coins inspired by the artist’s paintings.

The design featured on the coin is based on the painting “Copernicus the Astronomer, or A Conversation with God,” which depicts Nicolaus Copernicus deep in thought about the order of the universe. Created in the 19th century, the work was symbolic in nature—it depicted not only the scholar himself but also the significance of Polish scientific thought in European history.

This issue is part of a broader trend toward creating coins with artistic and educational value, in which historical painting serves as a vehicle for cultural content. In this case, European artistic heritage has been combined with modern coinage to create a product aimed at collectors interested in history, art, and science.

The coin is therefore part of a project aimed at commemorating the legacy of Jan Matejko and raising awareness of Nicolaus Copernicus, as well as highlighting the significance of their achievements in the context of history and culture.
