Product description

The coin is a silver collector’s item based on a motif drawn from Jan Matejko’s historical painting depicting the triumph of Jan III Sobieski at Vienna. The issue combines numismatics with history and art, giving it a distinct cultural and educational context. It was designed for those interested in history and artistic heritage, offering the opportunity to engage with an important historical event in the form of a durable minted product.

Appearance of the coin

The coin’s design draws inspiration from historical painting, with one side serving as a miniature work of art and the other maintaining a classic, orderly numismatic layout.

The reverse side depicts a scene inspired by Jan Matejko’s painting “Jan III Sobieski at Vienna,” rendered as a detailed composition. The arrangement of the figures, the dynamism of the scene, and the richness of detail echo the original painting, creating the effect of a miniature reproduction transferred onto the surface of the coin.

The obverse has a more formal layout and features identifying elements characteristic of coins, such as state symbols and inscriptions. The composition of this side is symmetrical and orderly, contrasting with the elaborate, artistic reverse. The design as a whole combines historical painting with classical numismatic form, creating a cohesive and aesthetic composition with strong cultural and collectible value.

Historical overview

The coin commemorates the events surrounding the Battle of Vienna in 1683, when the army led by Jan III Sobieski played a pivotal role in halting the Ottoman Empire’s expansion into Europe. This victory is considered one of the most important in the continent’s history, symbolizing the defense of Christian Europe and the significance of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on the international stage.

The issue was inspired by the paintings of Jan Matejko, who immortalized this event in the 19th century in a monumental work, depicting the Polish king’s triumph in a way that emphasized its historical and symbolic significance. This painting played a significant role in shaping national consciousness and the memory of past victories, particularly during the period of partition.
