Description of the "Crown Jewels: Williamson Diamond Brooch 2025" silver coin
The 2025 coin is the second issue in the Crown Jewels series, which showcases the most valuable jewels of the British royal family. The coin is inspired by the Williamson Diamond Brooch, designed around a rare pink diamond that was given to Princess Elizabeth in 1947 by Canadian geologist John T. Williamson as a wedding gift. Discovered in Tanzania, this diamond was cut to 23.6 carats and set in a platinum brooch surrounded by 203 white diamonds. This brooch was one of Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite pieces of jewelry, often worn during her seven-year reign. The coin features a matte proof finish, which highlights the details and gives it an elegant appearance. The mintage is limited to 6,000 pieces, each packaged in a black case bearing the Royal Canadian Mint logo and accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Design of the silver coin "Crown Jewels: Williamson Diamond Brooch 2025"
This elegant commemorative coin, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, commemorates the famous diamond brooch. The central motif on the reverse is a five-petaled flower, which is an interpretation of the Williamson Diamond Brooch. At the center of the flower is a pink glass stone, symbolizing the original diamond, surrounded by sparkling crystals. The entire design is set in a rhodium-plated frame, which adds extra brilliance to the composition. Additionally, the sides of the flower feature engraved floral accents inspired by the shape of the brooch. The obverse features a portrait of King Charles III, designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati, against a solid background. This coin represents a unique blend of Canadian heritage and royal elegance, making it an attractive addition to the collections of numismatists and enthusiasts of monarchy history.
Historical overview
The Williamson Diamond brooch, which served as the inspiration for the 2025 coin in the Crown Jewels series, has a rich and unique history tied to the British royal family. The centerpiece of this brooch is an extremely rare pink diamond, which was discovered in 1947 at the Mwadui mine in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) by Canadian geologist John Thorburn Williamson, the mine’s owner.
That same year, Williamson presented a 54.5-carat rough diamond to the young Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift to mark her marriage to Prince Philip. This gesture was an expression of his appreciation and loyalty to the monarchy, as well as a tribute to the future queen. The diamond was later cut into a dazzling round stone weighing 23.6 carats. Its extraordinary, naturally pink color makes it one of the rarest and most valuable gems in the world.
In 1952, Cartier set the diamond into a spectacular flower-shaped brooch—featuring a central pink stone surrounded by petals formed from over 200 smaller, colorless diamonds. The brooch quickly became one of Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite pieces of jewelry, and she wore it on numerous occasions during important ceremonies and diplomatic events. It symbolized not only a personal gift from her engagement, but also the strong ties binding the monarchy to Canada and the Commonwealth.
