Dysprosium belongs to the group of heavy rare earth elements. Compared to light rare earth elements, they are much rarer and their processing is more complex and therefore more expensive. Dysprosium plays an important role in magnetic alloys used in electromobility and wind energy.
Dysprosium is used as an alloying element in many technologies. These include permanent magnets, such as those used in wind turbine generators and electric car drive motors. Dysprosium increases coercivity, allowing magnets to retain their adhesive force for longer. At the same time, this additive increases the useful temperature range of the magnet. Although it is up to 80 degrees Celsius for neodymium-iron-boron magnets, it can be extended to over 200 degrees by adding dysprosium. Only then does demagnetization begin. This element is also used in nuclear reactors or in the production of sensors.
