Belonging to the so-called heavy rare earth elements, terbium is much rarer and more expensive to extract than the light elements in this group of raw materials. Terbium is one of the most expensive rare earth elements and plays an important role in the energy and transport transition.
The addition of terbium can improve the performance of permanent magnets with neodymium and iron-boron and increase the operating temperature from just below 80 to 200 degrees Celsius. NdFeB magnets are becoming increasingly popular in applications such as electromobility, wind energy, consumer electronics, and military technology. Terbium is also used to dope semiconductors and as a stabilizer in fuel cells. Other areas of application include phosphors and lasers, as well as ceramics in dentistry.
Why could terbium be an interesting investment?
- Annual global demand for terbium is expected to increase from 238 tons in 2020 to a maximum of 1,080 tons in 2050.
- Wind power capacity in Europe will almost double by 2030.
- The global fleet of electric vehicles could increase twelvefold by 2035.
