Iryd jest jednym z najrzadszych pierwiastków na Ziemi. Jego nazwa pochodzi od łacińskiego słowa „iris”, oznaczającego tęczę. Wynika to z uderzających i różnorodnych kolorów jego soli. Ir, występujący naturalnie w skorupie ziemskiej, występuje głównie w połączeniu z platyną i innymi metalami z grupy platynowców (PGM). Jednak jego rzadkość sprawia, że trudno go wydobyć, co przyczynia się do jego statusu cennego surowca.

Iryd jest najbardziej odpornym na korozję pierwiastkiem i występuje rzadziej niż złoto i srebro.

Iryd nadaje stopom pożądany stopień twardości i kruchości. Przemysł chemiczny wykorzystuje ten cenny metal do powlekania anod w elektrolizie chloro-alkalicznej jako części produkcji materiałów PVC. Istnieje duże zapotrzebowanie na iryd jako surowiec dla wielu przyszłych technologii. Oprócz organicznych diod elektroluminescencyjnych (OLED) obejmuje to elektrolizę do produkcji zielonego wodoru. Wraz z platyną iryd służy jako katalizator w elektrolizie membrany polimerowo-elektrolitowej (PEM).

Dlaczego iryd może być interesującą inwestycją?

Światowe rezerwy irydu są bardzo ograniczone. Połączenie wyjątkowej rzadkości występowania, trudności w pozyskaniu (produkcji)oraz wysokiego popytu przemysłowego sprawia, że iryd jest niezwykle interesującym metalem na rynku inwestycyjnym. Świadczą o tym również wzrosty cen w ostatnich latach.
Jeśli popyt na wodór będzie się rozwijał dodatnio do 2030 roku, popyt na iryd z samej elektrolizy może odpowiadać obecnej rocznej produkcji wynoszącej nieco poniżej 8 ton do 2030 roku, co wskazuje na lukę podażową. Iryd jest wydobywany wyłącznie jako produkt uboczny platyny i palladu, co oznacza, że jego produkcja nie może być łatwo zwiększona.
Oczekuje się, że rynek irydu będzie rósł o 6,4% rocznie do 2032 roku, z około 7,1 tony w 2023 roku do około 10,6 tony.
