Rhenium is the rarest of the stable elements (those that do not decay radioactively); even gold and platinum are more common. It never occurs naturally on its own, but is always a component of other minerals. Currently, this silvery-gray metal is mined during the smelting of molybdenum or copper.
Rhenium is a heavy and extremely durable metal. After tungsten, it has the second highest melting point among metals. This technological metal offers numerous superlatives. It has above-average hardness, high density, and is superconductive at low temperatures. Rhenium is the metal of choice for high-temperature applications and plays a significant role in catalysts for all types of refining and in the manufacture of rockets and aircraft turbines. Due to its high melting point, this metal is the ideal choice for the manufacture of thermoelectric elements and filaments in lamps and X-ray tubes.
An addition of just three to six percent rhenium makes materials stronger and more heat-resistant. 70 to 80 percent of this technological metal is used to produce high-temperature alloys or superalloys, which are sought after in extreme temperature and high-pressure conditions, such as in rocket and aircraft engines and gas turbines. Another important area of application is oil refining. Platinum-rhenium catalysts enable the economical production of high-octane unleaded gasoline. Heat also plays a role in most niche applications of rhenium, including electronic contacts, crucibles, and heating elements.
Why could ren be an interesting investment?
- A study conducted by the Institute for Future Studies and Technology Assessment (IZT) assigns rhenium to the highest criticality zone (very high level of supply uncertainty, very high level of vulnerability). The raw material is much rarer than the most important precious metals, but is not much more expensive as a result. Industrial demand is growing steadily, and so far there are no substitute options in terms of other metals. In their forecasts, aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus predict that the global number of aircraft will double by 2030.
- It is no surprise that experts predict that rhenium will see the greatest increase in value of all metals. As a physical purchase, rhenium is therefore very interesting for private investors, especially when they are pursuing long-term goals.
- Boeing forecasts demand for 44,000 new aircraft by 2043, while Airbus predicts that the number of commercial aircraft will double over the next 20 years.
- The global market for superalloys, which often contain rhenium and are essential for aircraft construction, is expected to grow by 8.3% annually until 2030.
