A 200 złoty gold coin was issued by the National Bank of Poland in 2004 to commemorate the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games in Athens. Made of 900-fine gold and struck using a mirror finish, it combines sports themes with motifs drawn from ancient Greece. The design references both the ancient roots of the Games and their modern character. The limited mintage of 6,000 pieces underscores the collectible nature of the issue.
The coin’s design combines ancient motifs with modern Olympic symbolism. The obverse features the coat of arms of the Republic of Poland and an image of Athena holding an olive branch. The reverse depicts an amphora with stylized figures of three modern runners, accompanied by images of ancient runners. The juxtaposition of these two motifs symbolically links the ancient origins of the Games with modern sports. The mirror finish and meticulously crafted details highlight the coin’s collectible nature.
The coin was put into circulation on August 9, 2004, in connection with the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games, which took place in Athens. It was part of a commemorative issue by the National Bank of Poland dedicated to this event, which also included two silver coins with a face value of 10 zł and a 2 zł coin made of Nordic Gold alloy.
The return of the Games to Athens held special symbolic significance—ancient Greece was the cradle of the Olympic tradition, and Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The design of the gold coin reflects this continuity by bringing together ancient and modern athletes in a single composition.
