Description of the 200 złoty gold coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Catholic University of Lublin, 2019
The gold coin was issued by the Polish Mint to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin—one of the most important Catholic universities in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. Since its founding in 1918, KUL has played a significant role in shaping intellectual, religious, and social life in Poland, serving as a center for independent scholarly thought and spiritual development. The university survived the difficult years of World War II and the communist era, becoming a symbol of academic freedom and commitment to Christian values. The contribution of the Catholic University of Lublin to the development of science, culture, and education in Poland cannot be overstated, and its alumni and faculty include prominent figures, including St. John Paul II. The issuance of this coin serves as a tribute to the university’s legacy and its continuous contribution to the country’s public and intellectual life.
Design of the 200 złoty gold coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Catholic University of Lublin, 2019
The coin was struck in gold in proof quality and features a refined design that underscores its prestigious character. In the center of the coin’s obverse is a rich composition symbolizing the university: a staff with a heart and a cross, referring to Christian traditions and values, next to which is the university’s motto, Deo et Patriae (“To God and the Fatherland”). On the left side is the abbreviation KUL, and below it the denomination. On the right side is the emblem of the Republic of Poland, inscribed within a form outlined by planes and architectural details, namely the organ from the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Auditorium, where the most important ceremonies take place. The reverse of the gold coin features the KUL coat of arms, namely a large, expansive image of the White Eagle in heraldic form, with a crown on its head. Above, against a background of a radiant glow, there is a ribbon bearing the university’s motto and a cross. The rim bears the inscription: 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF LUBLIN, which frames the composition in an elegant, classical style.
Historical overview
The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin was founded in 1918—the same year Poland regained its independence after 123 years of partition. The university was founded by Father Idzi Radziszewski, who sought to create an institution that would combine scholarship with Christian values. From its very inception, KUL has fulfilled the mission of educating Poland’s intellectual elite in the spirit of freedom, responsibility, and the scientific pursuit of truth.
During the interwar period, the university developed rapidly, earning a reputation as a center of independent Catholic and academic thought. After the outbreak of World War II, the university’s activities were brutally interrupted—many of its professors and students were arrested or murdered by the occupying forces. Despite this, lectures and scientific research continued underground, a testament to the extraordinary determination of the academic community. After the war, KUL was the only independent Catholic university in the entire Eastern Bloc. During the Polish People’s Republic, despite pressure from the communist authorities, the university retained its ideological autonomy and became a center of free thought and a venue for open intellectual debate. Of particular significance was the presence of Fr. Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II, who was associated with KUL for over twenty years as a lecturer in ethics. His scholarly and teaching activities played an important role in the development of Catholic personalist philosophy.
During the Third Republic, KUL solidified its position as a university with a strong humanistic, theological, and social identity. In 2005, following the death of John Paul II, the university took his name, thereby emphasizing not only its historical ties but also the enduring legacy of his teachings and the example of his life. Today, KUL continues its mission as an open institution that fosters dialogue between faith and science, building on the centuries-old tradition of European universities.
