The 500th anniversary of the publication of Chancellor Łaski’s Statutes is being commemorated with a special collector’s coin struck in gold!

Appearance of the coin

The obverse of the coin features the national emblem, the name of the issuer, the year of issue, and the denomination (Republic of Poland 2006, 100 zł). In the center is an open book bearing a clearly visible royal seal, symbolizing the first edition of the Łaski Statutes.

The reverse side features a portrait of Grand Crown Chancellor Jan Łaski reviewing the pages of the Statute. Next to it is an inscription reading: “500th anniversary of the promulgation of the Łaski Statute.”

The coin was struck using a mirror die in 8 grams of 900-fine gold. It is packaged in a protective capsule and a plastic case bearing the NBP logo. The coin offered here is in mint condition.

Historical overview

The Statute of Łaski was the first collection of universally applicable laws and current noble privileges in the territories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The resolution to codify the legislation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was adopted by the nobility and the king at the Sejm in Radom in 1505. The task of drafting the Statute was entrusted to the Grand Chancellor of the Crown, Primate Jan Łaski.

The Statute was compiled in two volumes. The first volume contains all public and judicial laws, including chronologically organized noble privileges, royal decrees, the customary law of the Kraków Region, the constitutions of successive Sejm sessions, and diplomatic treaties. The final section contains instructions on court proceedings. The first volume of Łaski’s Statutes was confirmed by the royal seal of Alexander Jagiellon.

Volume Two contained broadly defined German legislation that had no legal force within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as political treatises intended to assist students of law. The Łaski Statute contained the first printed text of “Bogurodzica,” considered today to be the first official anthem of the Republic. The original manuscript was looted during the Swedish Deluge and taken to Sweden, where it remains to this day.
