Historical overview
Karol Szymanowski was born in 1882 into a Polish aristocratic family living in Ukraine on the banks of the Dnieper River. He is now recognized worldwide as the most outstanding Polish composer, second only to the famous Fryderyk Chopin.
Szymanowski showed musical talent from the age of seven. He received his first lessons at home from his father. At the age of 10, Szymanowski began studying with professional music teachers. His first teacher noticed Szymanowski's great talent for composition. He continued his education in Warsaw and Berlin.
After the end of World War I, Karol Szymanowski was initially associated with Bydgoszcz. He then moved to Warsaw, where, thanks to his outstanding talent, he gained fame and began working as rector of the Warsaw Conservatory of Music. He spent the twilight of his life in Zakopane, where he was treated for tuberculosis, which had plagued him throughout his life.
He died at the age of 55 in Lausanne, during one of his therapeutic trips to a local sanatorium. The virtuoso was buried in Krakow.
The coin was issued by the National Bank of Poland (NBP), which is responsible for issuing currency in Poland. The NBP regularly puts into circulation both circulation coins and collector and commemorative coins commemorating important events, anniversaries, and historical figures.
