This unique coin with a face value of 10,000 zlotys was minted by the Polish Mint in 1987 to commemorate Pope John Paul II. It belongs to a series of collector's coins from the communist era, dedicated to events and figures of particular importance to Polish history. Appearance of the coin

A classic Polish coin, whose simplicity perfectly reflects the times of the Polish People's Republic. The reverse of the coin features an image of Pope John Paul II in liturgical vestments, with his right hand raised in blessing to the faithful, while his left hand holds a crosier. In the background, a scene from the Pope's pilgrimage can be seen. The pope's name is placed on the edge, with the denomination below. The obverse of the coin is decorated with the emblem of Poland – at that time, a white eagle without a crown, surrounded by the inscription RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA (Republic of Poland). Below is the date of issue and the mint mark.

Historical overview

The coin was minted in 1987 to commemorate Pope John Paul II's third pilgrimage to his homeland. This event had a special significance – not only religious, but also social and historical, as it took place during the twilight years of the Polish People's Republic, at a time of growing political and social tensions. The papal pilgrimages attracted millions of believers, becoming not only a manifestation of the deep religiosity of Poles, but also a symbolic act of unity and a manifestation of attachment to spiritual and national values.
