Coin production
The Mexican Mint is the oldest mint in the Americas. It has been operating since 1535 and produces circulation and commemorative coins. Libertad silver coins have been minted since 1982. The beautiful angel design has been on the coin since the beginning, but in 1996 the image was redesigned to make it more attractive. The image depicts the Angel of Independence, an eight-ton gold statue standing on a column in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.
The coin is made of 999 pure silver and is available in several sizes, of which Mennica Skarbowa offers you the most popular one - weighing one ounce.
The obverse of the coin features an image of an eagle fighting a snake – the coat of arms of Mexico – surrounded by a wreath and the words Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Around it are ten images of eagles that have served as the national emblem over the centuries, including the 16th-century eagle from the Codex Mendoza.
Since 1996, the reverse side has featured the aforementioned statue of the winged Angel of Independence, towering above the Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes.
The inscriptions at the top indicate the weight and fineness of the silver contained in the coin, as well as the year of minting.
