Description of the Queen's Beasts silver coin: Yale 10 oz

This is the seventh edition of the 10-ounce silver coins entitled "Beasts of the Queen." One of the majestic heraldic beasts, the Yale of Beaufort, is depicted here.

Appearance of the Queen's Beasts silver coin: Yale 10 oz

The obverse features an image of Queen Elizabeth II along with the denomination of £10. The reverse presents an image designed by Jody Clark – Yale of Beaufort. The latest version of the coin depicts the beast climbing the historic Beaufort Tower. Its proud horns and impressive fangs are prominently displayed.

Historical overview

During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953, 10 heraldic beasts stood guard. These creatures, specially carved for the occasion by James Woodford, symbolized various themes and lines of royal ancestry,  which were reflected in the young woman—the future Queen. Each beast, used as a heraldic emblem, was inspired by the Beasts of King Henry VIII, which still surround the bridge over the moat at his Hampton Court Palace.

Yale of Beaufort takes its name from Henry VII's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort. This figure represents the prestigious legacy of the monarchy dating back to the Tudor dynasty and the War of the Roses. This majesty has been captured by renowned Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark and is now available as a 10-ounce silver bullion coin.
