Description of the Polish silver coin: Midsummer Night

The 20 złoty coin, issued by the National Bank of Poland in 2006, belongs to the Polish Ritual Year series. It commemorates Midsummer Night, one of the oldest and most picturesque folk holidays in Poland, celebrated on the night of June 23-24. Its roots go back to ancient Slavic beliefs and are associated with the summer solstice. The tradition of this night combines pagan and Christian elements, and its celebrations were intended to honor the forces of nature and symbolic purification through fire. The coin was minted in silver in a mintage of 65,000 copies. It is not only a valuable numismatic item, but also a unique souvenir that preserves the heritage of Polish folk culture, eagerly sought after by collectors.

Appearance of the Polish silver coin: Midsummer Night

A silver coin, impressive in its form and symbolism. Beautifully crafted details are highlighted by a mirror-like stamp, bringing out the depth and precision of artistic craftsmanship in every element. The design of the coin's reverse takes us into the fairy-tale world of Midsummer Night. Its main element is a colorful fern flower, a symbol of mystery and dreams, whose color changes depending on the angle of inclination, adding a magical character to the composition. In the background, you can see tiny figures of gnomes, and below, the semicircular inscription MIDSUMMER NIGHT. The whole is surrounded by an intricately crafted relief, inspired by folk motifs associated with ancient summer solstice rituals.

The central part of the obverse features a dynamic scene depicting young people dancing joyfully around a bonfire. The composition is complemented by a decorative floral motif that forms an ornate border, reminiscent of the richness of Polish folk tradition. The emblem of the Republic of Poland, as well as the date of issue and denomination, are also featured. This unique coin is not only a numismatic gem, but also an artistic story about one of the most beautiful and mysterious Polish traditions.

Historical overview

This publication is part of the Polish Ritual Year series and commemorates Midsummer Night. This holiday, celebrated from June 23 to 24, has its roots in the pagan rituals of the Slavs associated with the summer solstice. Over time, under the influence of Christianization, these celebrations became associated with the eve of St. John the Baptist, which was intended to assimilate the old traditions with the new religion. In folk tradition, Midsummer Night was a time of magical rituals to ensure a good harvest and protection from evil forces. Bonfires were lit, people jumped over them, and girls threw wreaths into the water to symbolize the search for a future spouse. Today, Midsummer Night is celebrated in many regions of Poland, especially in Krakow, where concerts, festivals, and traditional rituals are organized on the Vistula River.
