Product description
The coin commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Greater Poland Uprising, one of the few successful Polish independence uprisings at the end of World War I, which led to the incorporation of the Greater Poland region into the reborn Polish state. This collector's item was issued for those interested in Polish history and the events of 1918, offering symbolic references to the people and symbols associated with this uprising. As a commemorative coin, it was designed to evoke both the image of struggle and social unity, as well as the figures of the leading participants in the uprising, making it an interesting addition to any collection of historical Polish coins.
Appearance of the coin
The overall design of the coin is narrative and thematically set in the context of the 90th anniversary of the Greater Poland Uprising, combining historical motifs related to the struggle to annex Greater Poland to independent Poland with symbolic representations of participants and figures from that period, so that the whole forms a coherent, legible story about the uprising. The reverse of the coin shows a stylized image of the white and red rosette worn by the Greater Poland insurgents with an eagle in shades of gray, which is one of the recognizable symbols of the uprising, and next to it is a stylized portrait of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, a key figure associated with the events of 1918. In the background, there is an excerpt from an appeal issued by the command of the Ostrów military district, and around this scene there are appropriate jubilee inscriptions, which give the design a solemn and historical character. The obverse of the coin focuses on the emblem of the Republic of Poland, above which the year of issue is placed, and below which a stylized column of Greater Poland riflemen is depicted during a parade, with their commander on horseback leading the unit. The inscriptions around this scene identify the issuing country and complete the composition, which symbolizes the unity and organized strength of the insurgents and emphasizes the patriotic nature of the commemoration.
Historical overview
The Greater Poland Uprising, which broke out in December 1918, was one of the few successful Polish uprisings in history and was crucial to the shape of the reborn Polish state after World War I. It was initiated by the local population of Greater Poland, including former German army soldiers and independence activists, in response to attempts to keep the region under German control. The insurgents, organized into local units and commanded by experienced leaders, effectively took control of key cities and strategic points in the region. Both military action and diplomacy played a significant role in the success of the uprising – Polish activists took advantage of the ceasefire and peace negotiations to strengthen the position of Greater Poland on the borders of the reborn Republic of Poland. The conflict ended in February 1919 with the signing of agreements with the German authorities, resulting in the incorporation of most of Greater Poland into Poland.
The Greater Poland Uprising is a symbol of courage, social unity, and effective action by the local community in the fight for independence. Its historical significance lies not only in its military success, but also in strengthening national identity and convincing Poles that peaceful and organized action can bring real results in the process of rebuilding statehood.
