Product description
A Polish collector's item minted in 2009 to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising and to pay tribute to Tadeusz Gajcy, an outstanding poet of the "Columbus" generation, who was active in the resistance movement against the German occupiers and took part in the Warsaw Uprising. The design of the coin combines historical content with references to literature and dramatic war events, for which it is valued by collectors interested in Polish history and literary culture.
Appearance of the coin
The overall design of the coin focuses on symbolic representations related to the Warsaw Uprising and the figure of Tadeusz Gajcy, combining figurative elements with poetic texts and historical motifs in a clear, narrative composition that commemorates Warsaw poets from the period of 1944.
The reverse side of the coin features a profile portrait of Tadeusz Gajcy, next to which is the outline of a rifle, as a reference to the context of the uprising. Above the bust is a semicircular inscription, and below, against the background of a piece of paper, is the inscription POECI WARSZAWSCY (Warsaw Poets), which is intended to emphasize Gajcy's affiliation with a group of poets associated with the city and the dramatic events of the war. On the left side of the reverse is a fragment of the Fighting Poland emblem, which further reinforces the historical character of the depiction.
The obverse features the emblem of the Republic of Poland, next to which are inscriptions indicating the year of issue and the value. To the left of the eagle, there is a scene depicting burning buildings and explosions, motifs referring to the destruction of the capital during the uprising. Below the emblem is a stylized Polish flag above a fragment of a destroyed brick wall, and against the background of the wall is a fragment of a quote from Gajcy's poem "To Posterity," which adds a poetic, reflective touch to the theme.
The obverse features inscriptions referring to the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising and the name of the issuer in a semicircular arrangement. The overall composition of both sides of the coin combines historical, symbolic, and literary elements, creating a coherent visual tribute to Tadeusz Gajcy and his generation in the context of one of the key events in 20th-century Polish history.
Historical overview
Tadeusz Gajcy was a poet and soldier in the Home Army, belonging to the "Kolumb" generation – young Poles who grew up during World War II and actively participated in the fight for their country's freedom. He was born in 1922 and from his youth was involved in underground activities and literary circles operating in occupied Warsaw. His work, although created in extremely difficult conditions, was distinguished by mature reflection on war, patriotism, and moral duty to his homeland. During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, Gajcy took an active part in the fighting, serving in the "Parasol" battalion and ultimately dying at a young age.
His poetry, including poems such as "To Posterity," became a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the dramatic condition of the insurgent generation. The coin commemorating Tadeusz Gajcy is a tribute to his life, work, and participation in the Warsaw Uprising. It recalls the fate of young poets and soldiers whose passion, courage, and artistic sensitivity became part of the national memory of the struggle for Poland's freedom during World War II.
